Welcome to My Blog!

Hi! Thank you for taking a moment out of your life to catch a glimpse into mine! I am shawna K, the owner of shawna K studio (weddings) and Pattycake Photography (contemporary children’s photography). I am also wife to my dear husband Michael and mom to three beautiful girls: Devyn, Tyler, and Jordyn. Since I always get asked . . . yes, Tyler & Jordyn are twins. They are fraternal and were born about 2 minutes apart. No, we weren’t “planning” on having twins (though I love it when I get asked that question!). Yes, I DO have my hands full (I sure wish I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me! haha!).

After taking about a year-long maternity leave with the twins, I am back to work doing what I am most passionate about: photographing people. My wedding imagery can be seen at www.shawnakstudio.com. I am currently accepting only a limited number of wedding commissions per year and have a few dates remaining for 2008. If you are interested in booking a wedding with me, please drop me a note so I can check my availability.

In addition to weddings, I love to photograph children and families. To see some of my spontaneous and fun children’s imagery, please visit www.PattycakePhoto.com. I also do commercial headshots and portfolio development for children and teens who are pursuing commercial careers.

The purpose of this blog is varied. It gives me a place to share personal stories and photographs from *my* life so that you can get to know me a little bit better. It is also a place where I give you, my clients, sneak peeks of your photos as I go through them and find my favorites. I’ll also share random thoughts and musings from my day-to-day life, just little things I think are interesting. If you like what you see or wish to comment in any way on the photos or something I’ve written, please feel free to click on the “comments” tab beneath each entry and send me a note.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Experimentation . . .

As you know, I like to experiment with new techniques and new directions. It helps keep me creatively alive, so to speak. I’m considering a new series of textures and print displays and I came across the following:

I’d love to get your feedback on this. Love it? Hate it? Like it but it could be better? Let’s hear it!

Thanks for stopping by!

Busy Saturdays . . .

After a long hiatus from the game, I have finally returned to the soccer field. Not as a defender this time around, but as a full-fledged SOCCER MOM! Oh my gosh! I really wanted to coach Devyn’s very first soccer team, but since I’ve been away from soccer for so long and since I had so many weddings this fall, I decided to sit this first season out. I am very happy, though, because Devyn’s coach is great. He used to coach high school boys and he is so good with the girls.

Little did I know, though, that a parent referees the games at this age (the 6 and under group), and since I told the coach I played for 12 years . . . well . . . I’ve pretty much “reff’ed” every game since! haha! So, I’ve left Mike on the sidelines to watch the twins, videotape the games, and photograph the games! He’s so patient with me! LOL!

Since I’m adamant about not posting recognizable images of children on my blog without their parent’s permission, here are a couple I can share:

Devyn has played 3 games now and I’ve discovered that she’s much better at offense than defense so far. I’ve also discovered that she knows way too many kids in the league, so she has spent a lot of time talking to her friends on other teams (the social butterfly that she is). However, at this last game she got really serious about soccer and really got aggressive and fought for the ball a lot. She didn’t score a goal, but came very close a couple of times. Sadly, when she realized she hadn’t scored a goal yet, she burst into tears on the drive home. It was so sad and yet kind of comical all at once.

Maybe next time . . . .

Baby Dominic!

Every once in a while I photograph babies who are way “smilier” than they are supposed to be at their particular age. Dominic is one of those extra super smiley babies! I am quite certain he was smiling and hamming it up for the camera way before my girls started really smiling. Well, of course, then he has these gorgeous blue eyes! What a cutie!

Welcoming Baby Lucas

I was so excited to photograph baby Lucas and his mommy and daddy. I have actually known Lucas’s mommy since she was in elementary school with my sister! I had so much fun . . . Lucas was just 13 days old when I photographed him and he was tired, then wide awake and alert, then very pouty, then hungry, and then he fell fast asleep again. I personally think he looks just like his grandpa . . . who happens to be one of the best doctors ever! And I should know because he delivered all three of my babies!

Here’s Lucas:
